Bach B minor Mass, Waterperry Opera Company
Waterperry Opera Company's performance of Bach's B Minor Mass at Holywell Music Room on Friday 24th April 2026 was quite simply the best I have ever heard.
As a Bach-lover and someone who attends quite a lot of choral and sacred music, I do not say that lightly. This was an inspired performance, infused throughout with joyous vitality and bringing daring and risk to the familiar score.
Conducted by the live-wire Bertie Baigent, the soloists performed the choral parts as well as their own arias, which worked admirably in the intimate acoustics of the Holywell Music Room.
The original baroque string instruments were perfect in their sympathetic timbres and the valveless trumpet and horn were simply glorious.
This was a performance that really could not be bettered. If this is a taste of what WOC is going to achieve under its new director John Savournin, then there is much to look forward to.
