Vache Baroque Festival. Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire, England. CHARPENTIER: LA DESCENTE D’ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS Co-founders Betty Makharinsky and Jonathan Darbourne invite you to Charpentier’s opera La descente D’Orphée aux enfer (The Descent of Orpheus ino the Underworld) on Friday 2nd and Sunday 4th September 2022. The opera will be in two acts prefaced with sound installations and pre-show pop-up performances, including Jephte (1648) by Giacomo Carissimi [20 mins].

The opera, written in 1686, takes a favourite love story from classical mythology, that of Orpheus and Eurydice.

The production features Samuel Boden and Henry Waddington in the title roles, and Alexander Chance (who recently became the first countertenor to win the International Handel Singing Competition) in the role of Ixion.

It will be performed on Friday 2 and Sunday 4 September

Grounds open at 3pm for picnicking and exploring, as well as enjoying sound installations and pre-show pop-up performances. The main performance is scheduled to begin at 6.30pm, but may start up to half an hour before the scheduled start time due to changing weather conditions. We therefore recommend that all guests arrive no later than 6pm. Orphée running time is c. 60 mins, two acts with a short interval. Jephte running time is c. 20 mins.
